"I had started there (at the institute) before the war. Not that I was particularly interested. But they gave a military deferment" (1a).

В бричке сидел господин, не красавец, но и не дурной наружности, ни слишком толст, ни слишком тонок нельзя сказать, чтоб стар, однако ж и не так чтобы слишком молод (Гоголь 3). The gentleman in the carriage was not handsome, but neither was he particularly bad-looking, he was neither too fat, nor too thin

he could not be said to be old, but he was not too young, either (3a).
