(return (come back)) defeated.
According to Plutarch and other sources, a Spartan woman seeing her son off to battle handed him his shield («щит») and said, "Either this or upon this" (Plutarch, Moralia, "Sayings of Spartan Women," 16). These words are traditionally interpreted as meaning "Return victorious or be brought home dead upon your shield."
